The Buenos Aires Herald published my letter today. Here it goes: For some reason, when a tragedy such as the train crashes in Once and Castelar happen, I always remember a play by Arthur Miller called “All my sons”, based on a true story. The main character, Joe Keller, is exonerated after being found responsible for the deaths of 21 pilots, for having shipped damaged aircraft cylinder heads for P-40s planes out of his factory during WWII. His son Larry, a soldier missing in battle, commits suicide when he learns about his father’s guilt. When Joe finds this out, he realizes that all those dead young men were also his sons. And that’s the final blow. Now, having an obsolete railway system such as ours, with little or no maintenance, inevitably leads to these catastrophes that cause so many deaths and destroys so many lives. It’s the logical consequence, something that might be expected. The question is: Who are the Joe Kellers in this tragic, real-life story? Do they have any guilt feeling, any true sympathy? Moreover, do we as fellow citizens realize that the dead and injured people are us as well? That we are all passengers on the same death train? Or have we become used to these everyday tragedies? Hopefully, not.
