The Building Blocks of Healthy Eating To get the right balance it’s important to eat a variety of foods from the following food groups:- • Fruit and Vegetables – eat plenty and remember fresh, frozen, dried and tinned all count. • Starchy foods - include bread, rice, potatoes, pasta, chapattis, sweet potatoes and breakfast cereal. Eat at each meal and preferably choose wholegrain or whole wheat varieties that contain fibre. Eating foods high in fibre can help you feel fuller for longer, which is ideal for losing weight. • Milk and dairy foods or non-dairy alternatives – eat some of these, choosing lower fat options where possible. • Meat, fish, eggs, beans, lentils and peas. Eat some, choosing lower fat alternatives as often as you can. Aim for at least two portions of fish a week, including one portion of oily fish. • Limit your intake of foods high in fat and/ or sugar like sweets, chocolates, pastries, cakes, biscuits, sugary drinks, etc. While these foods are not needed in the diet, and are often high in calories, for some people they make a diet palatable. So a healthy eating approach doesn’t necessarily cut out these foods, but you do need to watch how much and how often you’re eating these.
