The Bukit Gelugor by election should serve as a referendum of the leadership of Malaysias reformist Prime Minister, Dato Seri Najib Razak. We are today plagued by a very dangerous trend of racial extremism which may have a severe impact on race relations in this country. We have Perkasa, ISMA and various other quarters, even retired judges who have made statements with grave racial slants, clearly provocative, which need a political response but yet, the Prime Minister remains totally silent. Is the Prime Minister by his silence, indicating support for these groups? The Bukit Gelugor by election should be a referendum of Najibs success as the reformist Prime Minister he declares himself to be. It would be an opportunity for him to personally explain to the people how his silence in the face of such hate speech and racial attacks serves to benefit his push for 1Malaysia. He needs to now convince the people that his approach of silence and ignoring these problems is the correct one to take in the larger interests of this country and beneficial to nation building and national reconciliation. Does the Prime Minister have answers? Will he rise to the occasion and respond or will he continue in his silence, side stepping these issues in the hope that they are yet again ignored and forgotten for fear that he may lose further support for speaking up against these people? If he is afraid, the Prime Minister cannot claim to have the moral authority to continue leading this nation as his would be no better than a case of an utter failed premiership which would in time be remembered for leading this country into chaos and collapse.
