The Butler: Based on a true story this is basically a history of the Civil Rights movement in America told through the eyes of a Black Butler who served all the Presidents from Eisenhower to Reagan. The cast list reads like a Whos Who of Black and/or Liberal Minded Actors, there are more stars in this film than on a clear night in Snowdonia Born and brought up on a cotton farm in the Southern States his family were dirt poor farm workers, his father was killed by the white farm owner for challenging the owner over the treatment of his mother. Of course the owner, being white, was allowed to do this without punishment He becomes a house nigger serving in the owners house and is told that when he is in a room it should feel empty. A statement that is repeated when he starts work in the Whitehouse Beautifully underplayed by Forrest Whittaker opposite Oprah Winfrey, The Butler is a well realised history film that never feels like it is educating you, but that is what it is doing. It tells the story well and carries you along with it nicely (although some of the Civil Rights vignettes occasionally felt a little cliched) One last thing - the great and the good have obviously been straining to be associated with such a Worthy film, such that in the credits the list of Producers, Executive Producers and Co-Producers seems to go on longer than the actual cast! While not necessarily being Oscar material this is a good film and worth seeing — with Julie Griffiths
