The CPH(critical period hypothesis) holds that first language - TopicsExpress

The CPH(critical period hypothesis) holds that first language acquisition must occur before the brain be lateralized, at about the age of one through 10. In that way learning a second language will be faster than the first one. According with Child Development in 1978 Society for Reserch in Child Development outlined two situation. One, the children learn the language listening and repeating what they have heard. In that way they learn how to talk, but without complete meaning. That means the infants learn sporadic worlds even do they don’t know what these words means neither how to use then in completed sentences. This is the first step how language is developed in human beings. The second one is about inherited. The study explained that somehow the new born babies comes with some of the features of the language coded in the brain. Because of that, children start to use base grammar without been taught. According to Steven Pinker’s model (the video uploaded in the Virtual Class) presented in Words and Rules, our brains come primed for language acquisition. Since we are babies we have the ability to memorize vocabulary, internalize rules regarding our native language´s grammar and syntax, and remember irregular forms. He also mentioned that children are usually hearing and processing speech, so their brains are able to analyze the grammatical structure of the sentences and parse it into basic rules about the language. If we take all those factors into account what we have is, children learn the basic vocabulary of their langue, as well as grammatical details like add an “ed” to put a verb in the past tense. He also outline that mistakes are important because they show how the langue is acquired. Source location: jstor.org/discover/10.2307/1128751?uid=4&sid=21102681727657.
