The Captain at his clock. I know that his life was lived as brilliantly as he wrote so many novels, but I wish this ending would not have come so soon. Rosemary, what a great adventure the two of you lived - and thank you for letting me be a little part of that adventure and sharing so many of your stories with me. Oh, how I would have loved to spend a few days with you two sailing on your yacht...then again I remember you once told me that you had to call coast guard life flight for rescue, so maybe not! But its fun to imagine the two of you on the sea, sailing the world as you did. xo Ruby I am so thankful for my many days over the last few years spent at La Finca studying with John, learning from both of them, gratefully indulging in Rosemarys cooking, art and experiences, and enjoying the most intellectual, creative and freeing moments of my life. Oh, we worked hard, to be sure, but we knew never to complain because we were doing what we loved - writing. John stayed right beside me even when I wasnt at La Finca. While I nearly froze to death in a cheap flat in Paris with no heat trying to finish my first novel, for several weeks, John was the only person I communicated with. I e-mailed him every chapter along the way and rarely a couple hours passed before he replied with comments. Keep going. I think you meant this. You got it. Forward! Well fix this later. Bloody good. Maybe consider this but not now. He led me all the way to the end. He changed my life. As a novelist, he gave so very much to his readers all around the world. As a teacher, he gave with the same intensity, passion and talent to his students. I never got used to seeing his 18 books on the wall behind him. On JGDs clock (to help writers structure stories in a 12-hour sequence) 3 p.m. is where your main character meets her mentor. He was mine. Ill never know a better writer, a better teacher, a better friend. John, I love you and I will miss you so very much. I promise to come back with the elixir. Rest in peace.
