The Carlsbad Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) While I am pleased that all employees are safe and the mine remains stable after the minor ceiling collapse, I am concerned about the delayed reporting. Since the initial event, our office has pushed the entire WIPP operation to be as transparent and forthcoming as possible. I am pleased WIPP informed the community of the situation, however the announcement was nearly a week too late. The Department of Energy (DOE) and WIPP cannot allow itself to fall back into its opaque ways that undermine public confidence. WIPP must continue to recover the mine, as well as instill confidence and trust in the people of Carlsbad. This cannot be accomplished without complete transparency.
