The Centre for Financial Markets and Institutions (CFMI) set up by Indian Institute Of Management-Bangalore carries out cutting-edge research & offers specialized programs & training to meet the increasingly sophisticated demands of the financial sector. CFMI, inter-alia, organizes programs for exchange of views between the practitioners and academics by inviting eminent scholars and experts from the industry and regulating agencies to discuss, debate and direct future policies relating to financial markets and institutions. Yesterday, 20 October 2014, CFMI held a program on Finance and Ethics, the eminent panelists for which, included Dr.Duvvuri Subba Rao, Former Governor of Reserve Bank of India (2008 to 2013), Mr.C.B.Bhave, Former Chairman of the Securities & Exchange Board of India (2008 to 2011), Mr.R.K. Dubey, Chairman & MD of Canara Bank, Mr.Sharad Sharma, MD of State Bank of Mysore… I was a special invitee of Dr.Charan Singh, Chairman of the Panel to participate. It was all vintage stuff of discussions for a select gathering of eminent elitists, academicians, industrialists, professionals.. IIM-B is a frequent haunt for me in Bangalore.. The panelists by and large concluded that the Standards of Ethics are below the desirable expectations but the status obtained is also far below in all walks of life at present. Awareness and education on Ethics would need to be dovetailed as a separate sub-segment at all levels from Elementary to Higher Education to technical & other professional Courses.
