The Chatham Naval Memorial, Kent, and a piece of Panel #9, with - TopicsExpress

The Chatham Naval Memorial, Kent, and a piece of Panel #9, with the name of Able Seaman George Files, who died 12th October 1915 and whose body. like so many sailors lost at sea, was never recovered. George Files was serving aboard Frons Olivae a Yarmouth-registered Drifter on lease to the Royal Navy, when it struck a mine off the North Foreland and was lost with all hands. George is remembered on the new Whitfield war memorial, to be unveiled on Remembrance Sunday this year. Sad to report, the Chatham Naval Memorial has been the victim of persistent vandalism, so that the hours it is now open to the public has now been restricted. I am sickened by this - people such as George Files gave their lives for those that follow, and to be repaid in such a manner is simply vile. On the day that we visited, the Chatham Naval Memorial was looking is pristine, perfect condition, and long it may be that way. RIP AB George Files and all those commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial.
