The Christian and Mental Illness Writings (article #1) The definition of mental illness by the NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness): “A mental illness is a medical condition that disrupts a persons thinking, feeling, mood, ability to relate to others and daily functioning… Serious mental illnesses include major depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and borderline personality disorder.” The definition I will give is as follows: A mental illness is a dysfunctional attitude or action that results in belief or behaviour that is not in accordance to God’s standard of perfection, such dysfunction maybe of different degrees of severity and consequence. Such has three major contributing factors of: Sin, Sickness (physiological factors), and Satan. Let us consider this definition more closely… The definition that I give is mental illness is a dysfunctional attitude or action that results in belief or behaviour that is not in accordance to God’s standard of perfection, such dysfunction maybe of different degrees of severity and consequence…. In other words, God’s standard is mental perfection; in which, He is perfect in all His attitudes and actions. He has no belief or behavior that is not perfect. When His creation fails to measure up to His standard of perfection such is to fall short of yielding to the completely perfect mental state of God. Therefore, one is experiencing to some degree and consequence of mental illness (not measuring up to God’s standard of mental perfection) or defect. Three contributing factors to Christians with Mental Illness are… Sin… Sickness (physiological factors)… Satan’s influence and ideology accepted… LORD willing the next article will begin to discuss the three contributing factors of: Sin, Sickness, and Satan to the Christian with mental illness ….
