The Church at Oviedo – The people of this culture are engaged in a relentless pursuit of individualism, individual expression and being different. They truly think tattoos, piercings, hair styles, jewelry, overly expensive sneakers, shoes, handbags, gadgets and gimmicks make them stand out… but it doesn’t, that’s just their fantasy belief. In reality, it’s all just wasted thought, energy and money because in fact those things just make them the same as everybody else. It’s literally the “non-conformist” that doesn’t notice everyone around them is the same as them which makes them now a conformist. They don’t notice that they’re unnoticeable because they are the same. Almost all of us like superhero movies and hero stories in general. We think that if we could fly like Superman or be tough like Batman we would stand out and be different, or if we had money like Iron Man, we would stand out as we go around in that cool suit. The culture, of which we are a part of, is so caught up in external things. The culture puts value upon things that have no true value. We’re so impressed by bedazzlements, shiny things and technology that comparatively we despise the true point of those stories. If standing out in this world is important to you do it by demonstrating good character. That’s what make these heroes stand out. Our character is what differentiates us from everyone else not what we wear on ourselves. If anyone wants to be attractive display Jesus’ kindness. If anyone wants to be loved, love others like Jesus did and still does. If anyone wants to be admired, be honest and honor God in how you conduct your life like Jesus did, then you’ll stand out but for all the right reasons. If anyone wants to be noticed be truthful and bold in speaking the truth, passionate about righting wrongs, heavily concerned about the lost and stand-up for the helpless just like Jesus. Then you’ll be noticed and be different. The you truly be a “non-conformist”. Against the backdrop of our culture, you will certainly stand out and do big things.
