The Cinema: A Cool Place in a Hot World Last night after a quick - TopicsExpress

The Cinema: A Cool Place in a Hot World Last night after a quick bit of shelf-building and attaching toilet seats (anyone reading this is going to get as bored of my house-moving antics as I am!) I went to see a Sisters of Mercy video filmed in Welwyn Garden City! OK, actually it’s called ‘The World’s End’ and it’s the latest (and last?) film of the Wright, Pegg and Frost team that brought us ‘Spaced’, ‘Shaun of the Dead’ and ‘Hot Fuzz’. But like a Sisters of Mercy video shot in Welwyn Garden City it was as much a tragedy as a comedy. When you come out of the cinema it’s not with a light heart and a head full of the jokes you’ve just heard and seen. It’s full of bitterness and regret for your lost youth and disdain for those who are trapped in the past, those that lie to themselves and others for some sort of self-image reason and disdain for yourself as there’s probably a little bit of you in this description. That’s the clever thing about this film. It’s a lousy comedy but it does make you think. It also shows you another angle to the ‘cool slacker’ character that Pegg so ably played in Spaced and Shuan of the Dead. Here is another view of him: a four-letter-word (chose your own… most will fit) who still thinks that jokes you shared at the age of sixteen are funny, that he’s the centre of the universe and that the world stood still when he was young and everything that’s happened since is unimportant or irrelevant. I do like the way that in the Wright/Pegg/Frost universe the monsters are not simply one-dimensional terrors that must be destroyed. In Shaun of the Dead, the zombies at the end were not simply hunted down and decapitated, many found jobs collecting super-market trolleys or performing on game-shows. There’s a similar inclusive feel to the ‘monsters’ at the end of this film. It’s not all bleak and depressing. In many ways it reminded me of my experiences on roller coasters. Did I enjoy it? No, but it was a worthwhile and interesting new experience and very well orchestrated.
