The Circassian American artist Jodet O. Shuquem (1940-2014) was born in Jerusalem. In 1960, he travelled to the United States from Jordan to study engineering at California State Polytechnic University – Pomona. He remained in the USA and married there. In his teens he took lessons in oil colour painting with a Russian artist, which lasted for a short time. While studying engineering, he enrolled in various art classes: oil colour painting, water colour painting, still life and abstract, print making, silk screen, and wood cuts. Shuquem was inspired by Circassian culture and folklore to create a number of “Circassian” paintings. He displayed his works at a number of communal art shows, e.g. NOHO Senior Arts Colony, New York. His son R.K. Shuquem is also an artist of note. Attached are some of Jodet’s “Circassian” paintings. The Shuquem clan (Шокъум; Shoqwm) hails from the Cherek (Шэрэдж; Sherej) Region of Kabarda, Eastern Circassia. A few families emigrated to Amman, Jordan, in 1878, and helped to establish the (then) abandoned settlement. Most of the Shoqwm clan remain in Circassia. Gallery shuquem/jodet/
