The City Council, at its October 28th meeting, approved the updated Snow and Ice Control Policy. This policy outlines the City’s program for responding to snow and ice events. Included in this policy is a priority ranking for the treatment of the City’s street system, equipment and route assignments, instructions to operators and the record keeping procedures associated with snow and ice removal operations. Currently the Department of Engineering and Public Works, and the Parks and Recreation Department are responsible for 474 lane miles of streets, 293 cul-de-sacs, 18 parking lots and approximately 12 miles of trails and sidewalks. This requires a fleet of two anti-icing units, 15 dump trucks, 13 pickups, three tractor mounted snowblowers and various other pieces of equipment. A total of three supervisors and 34 full-time employees are assigned to keeping the street and public property system safe for motorists and pedestrians. In 2013/14 this crew dedicated over 6,600 hours to the City’s snow and ice control program.
