The City of Fort Bragg Green Alley Project is currently in the design stage. The project will result in the alleys being completely resurfaced and addressing drainage issues at the same time. Construction will begin in Summer 2014. The purpose of the Green Alley project is to infiltrate storm water now running off streets before it reaches sensitive receiving waters. Infiltrating urban runoff will utilize the soils beneath to filter typical urban pollutants like motor oil and bacteria, and thereby minimize urban runoff directly reaching receiving waters. This approach is meant to mimic natural conditions before urbanization when native soils absorbed rainfall that recharged groundwater where there are now homes and alleys with much harder surfaces that resist rainfall infiltration. Another upfront task is to monitor the quality of waters running in alleys during rainstorms. City staff may be roaming alleys during upcoming storms (in the dark if necessary) to capture samples during or after rainfall. Samples will then be analyzed for urban pollutants so that existing runoff water quality can be compared to post-treatment runoff quality after construction. The design will utilize LID (Low Impact Development) techniques.
