The City of Pekin is announcing the closure of VFW road from 5th Street west to the Railroad crossing starting on May 12, 2014. Previously the City had suspended this closure due to weather and a railroad requirement for the construction crew but the project is now ready for advancement. Again this closure is needed because of the potential conflict with the traveling public due to poor visibility at the crossing with all the construction equipment, trucks, and workers utilizing the existing railroad crossing on VFW Rd. It is anticipated that the road will be closed until this portion of new roadway is complete. Access to the local business including Old Heritage Gardening Center, F. L. Smidth, Coparts and the other business located along VFW will continue to have access from IL 29 on the existing roadway. Directional signage has been installed to assist drivers with the access to businesses and will remain in place throughout construction. The City of Pekin appreciates everyone’s patience during construction of this roadway improvement.
