Read more in the news release below. ___________________ City of Rochester - News Release City Leaders, Harts Grocer Cut Ribbon for First On-Street Bicycle Corral (Friday, September 19, 2014) - Environmental Services Commissioner Norman Jones, City Engineer Jim McIntosh and Councilmember Elaine Spaull joined representatives of Harts Local Grocers, Friday to cut the ribbon on Rochesters first on-street bicycle corral Friday. Our bicycle infrastructure gives citizens more transportation options, reduces vehicle congestion and contributes to a cleaner environment, said Mayor Lovely Warren. For these reasons and more, my administration is committed to urban bicycling. I want to thank Harts Local Grocers for helping make Rochester even more bicycle friendly by allowing us to install this bicycle corral outside their store. This is an exciting trend, not just in Rochester, but around the country, said Glenn Kellogg, President of Harts Local Grocers. The bicycle culture is catching on and were really excited to be part of that movement. Were proud to be the first business in Rochester with an on-street bike corral. The corral is located in front of Harts Winthrop Street entrance and replaces a single car parking space with enough locking racks to accommodate 10 bicycles. The corral will be in place from April to November and revert to vehicle parking during the snowy season. The ability to securely park a bicycle at a destination is a primary motivator for choosing whether to bike or drive. As more city residents and visitors choose bicycling as a mode of transportation, the need for bike parking continues to grow. On-street bike corrals increase the visibility of bicycling as a transportation choice and show that a business, or business district, is bike-friendly. The City is interested in working with local businesses to install more bike corrals.
