The Climate Shift Address to Our World Four score and seventy years from now our children will wonder what has been brought forth on this planet, a new culture, conceived in EcoConsciousness, and dedicated to the proposition that all people deserve a healthy planet to live together in harmony. Now we are engaged in a great climate shift, testing whether this community, or any so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great disagreement on this issue. We have come to discuss a portion of that world, as a future living place for those who here gave their effort so this planet might endure. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this. But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate -- we can not consecrate -- we can not hallow -- this time. The brave people, living and and yet to be born, who empowered this community, have consecrated it, far above our limited power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what we did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who have sacrificed their creature comforts here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us -- that from these many species we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion -- that we here highly resolve that these future children shall not have been born in vain -- that this planet, aligned with Mother Nature, shall have a new birth of freedom -- and that community of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth. We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all creatures are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creative Forces with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.
