The Colorado Union of Taxpayers wishes to express, in strongest possible terms, its opposition to HB14-1164. This bill would allow people who have never lived in a particular jurisdiction to vote in the local elections! Among numerous catastrophic consequences that it is likely to produce, there is a real possibility that it will be used to manipulate election outcomes, and undermine the taxpayer’s protections as established by the Taxpayers Bill of Rights. This 133 pages long Bill is poorly written and ill considered. It shows every hallmark of being a product of a back-room deal by a bunch of lawyer-lobbyists eager to please their clients at the expense of the Colorado voters and taxpayers. Given the complexity and Byzantine structure of the Bill. The Colorado Union of Taxpayers is even skeptical whether the Bill’s sponsors, Senators Ulibarry and Roberts as well as the Representatives Hullinghorst and Murry have even themselves bothered to truly understand this Bill. CUT object to the enactment of another law based on the idea that “we have to pass it, in order to know what is in it”. The last year’s Legislative debacle HB13-1303 is badly in need of reform, but HB14-1164 is not it. The HB14-1164 is the case of cure being worse than the disease. CUT urges everyone to oppose the HB14-1164. We also urge Colorado lawmakers to find a more common sense approach to dealing with the damage done by last year’s elections “modernization” Bill. Gregory N. Golyansky, President, Colorado Union of Taxpayers. (720) 201-8789.
