The Comal Independent School District had seven students from six campuses participate in the 2013 Lone Star Academy this summer. The students included: Clear Spring Elementary School – Emma Kirchhoff Garden Ridge Elementary School – David Oliphant Hoffman Lane Elementary School – Mason Lee Hoffman Lane Elementary School – Bryson Snow Indian Springs Elementary School – Nicholas Arguello Morningside Elementary School – Giancarlo Valenzuela Spring Branch Middle School – Keslyn Surovik These students in grades 4-8 were among a distinguished conglomerate of 1,007 students elected to attend the camp based on their demonstrated academic success and leadership ability, an educator recommendation, and involvement in school/community activities. The weeklong program is designed to develop and enhance leadership skills while teaching the children about Texas. These students are shown how their learning in the classroom relates to historical, political, environmental and scientific sites across the Lone Star State. “It’s always a positive thing when our students are branching out and taking advantage of opportunities to expand their knowledge about any subject they may be studying,” said Linda Dreibrodt, Comal ISD Social Studies Coordinator. “To get hands-on experience, as well as leadership training, will only help their critical thinking and problem solving skills while adding to their ability to be leaders in the classroom and the community. In my opinion, it’s also wonderful the students had a chance to learn more about their home state of Texas during the leadership academy.”
