The Commandant of the Kwara State Command of NSCDC, Mr. Yerima - TopicsExpress

The Commandant of the Kwara State Command of NSCDC, Mr. Yerima Gana, denied reports published in some dailies alleging the arrest of five NSCDC personnel for scooping fuel, he attributed it to personal animosity and hatred for the Corps by the Police. According to the Commandant, rather than enjoying synergy and collaboration, the Corps has been facing unnecessary rivalry from the police. Yerima stressed that, recently, the Corps was given a Pick- up Hillux vehicle by the management of NNPC for the purpose of monitoring and effective policing of the various right of ways based on the successes recorded so far which triggered the anger as its been perceived by the police that the gesture received by the Corps its a signal that the Corps is about taking over the protection of NNPC infrastructure considering what they have been benefiting. The hatred and jealousy equally became obvious when the Kwara State Command of the Corps sent out invitation letters to all agencies of government including the police, public and private sectors, the Governor, State Assembly Members, Judiciary, NNPC and its subsidiaries, Telecommunications industries , P H C N, Traditional and Religious leaders, Youth Organisations, Armed Forces and other Security Agencies among others to invite them to the stakeholders forum in order to discuss the Corps mandate as regards protection of critical National Assets and Infrastructure and the need for synergy and collaboration by all other stakeholders. It is worthy of note that, the acclaimed arrested personnel were deployed officially and legally to guard the NNPC leaking pipeline as requested by the authority. Therefore, the idea of the police team claiming they went on supervision on the ground of information received which led to the arrest of the personnel was baseless and uncalled for. The Commandant reiterates that, the police authority should note that the personnel were deployed by an authority and if there was any such information concerning them, without prejudice the Command should have been officially notified for a joint operation to take place in order to effect the arrest as a mark of synergy and collaboration. What transpired is a calculated attempt to dent the image and credibility of the Corps as the Corps personnel on legitimate duty actually prevented the police team from carrying out their normal Scooping business which angered them, thus leading to the forceful arrest and subsequent accusation because they were not armed like their police counterpart. It also aimed at undermining the Corps role in protecting critical National Assets by sending wrong signals to the management of NNPC and other stakeholders that the Corps is not capable of carrying out such function. The whole story is ridiculous and it makes a mockery of the relationship between the two security agencies charged with the responsibility of curbing crime and criminalities as the police in their characteristic manner has manipulated the situation in order to score cheap goals, to gain undue popularity as well as sympathy.
