Executive summary Introduction It is a well known fact that the combination of warm water, decent lighting and hygienic sanitation facilities is a precondition for health and for success in the fight against poverty, hunger, child deaths and gender inequality. 2.6 billion People – half the developing world – lack a simple improved latrine. The same amount of people or more do not have the luxury of decent lights in their homes. The same people and more have to use innovative methods or make use of fire to heat water. They simply do not have the luxury of electric geysers. The effects of the lack of sanitation, warm water, and lights have a health risk to the people. The benefits of improving access to these necessities go beyond any one sector. It will have billions of $in benefits for the areas that is improved. The challenge Warm water, decent lighting and clean health promoting sanitation is fundamental building blocks in the fight against world poverty. A lack of the mentioned necessities is undermining efforts to end extreme poverty and disease. In Sub-Saharan Africa more than 540 million people lack access to these necessities. People living in rural areas continue to be under-served. The population in these areas are mainly woman and children. Meeting the need of these woman and children with these necessities, something taken for granted in developed countries, is possible and imperative. Reasons that should lead us forward in our efforts to supply these necessities are: Sanitation is vital for human life. Sanitation, warm water and decent lighting contribute to dignity and social development. All three of these necessities contributes to the protection of our environment. Healthy sanitation and warm water will save thousands of lives annually.
