The Constitution of Albania in 1976 stated that The State recognizes no religion, and supports and carries out atheistic propaganda in order to implant a scientific materialistic world outlook in people. To carry out its goal, Albania, with its former policy of state atheism, executed eminent believers or imprisoned them in order to reeducate them, outlawed religious practice, mandated individuals to change their names if they were of a religious origin, and demolished every mosque, church, monastery, convent, religious school, hospital and orphanage, despite the objection of even some members of the communist ruling Party of Labour of Albania.
