The Continental Marines were disbanded in 1775 along with the Continental Navy. This was for the survival of the United States of America. The Marines barely participated in the first US civil war. In 1900, the Navy decided that Marines could take and hold foreign bases/forts. Really, thats as far as the Marine Corps. have come.
