The Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source (CHESS) in Ithaca, NY has an immediate open­ing for an entry level re­search support specialist to assist and support sci­entists from around the world in our X-ray re­search facility. This posi­tion involves designing, building, maintaining, and troubleshooting complex scientific equipment, as well as interacting with experimenters from many different back­grounds, supporting their research, ensuring prop­er safety procedures, and providing instruc­tions and service to staff and visitors to the lab. We seek candidates who have a team-based ap­proach and mindset and enjoy working in a techni­cal laboratory. Through working with other sup­port specialists, scien­tists, and supervisors, the RSS I will be trained on procedures and de­velop the skill sets nec­essary to handle multiple tasks efficiently and pro­vide the best possible support to our research­ers. This position in­volves some routine tasks, but is mostly com­prised of long-term proj­ects, equipment mainte­nance and design, and supporting researchers. CHESS operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, when researchers are visiting; some eve­nings, nights, weekends, and holidays are re­quired. A Bachelor’s degree in a scientific or technical field or equivalent work experience is required. The ideal candidate should have excellent communication and peo­ple skills, a work history demonstrating strong motivation, reliability, and good judgment, and prior experience working in a lab. Candidates must be able to troubleshoot, re­pair, and maintain various systems including: com­puter, mechanical, and electronic equipment. Candidates must also track and analyze instru­ment performance, and be able to lift 50 lbs. Pre­vious experience with motion control systems, data collection/analysis, vacuum equipment and procedures, and hands­on design and assembly work is desirable. CHESS is located on Cornell University’s Itha­ca campus in Upstate NY, and is funded by the NSF. Each year, 500-600 scientists and stu­dents visit our X-ray fa­cility to do research in physics, biology, chemis­try, and environmental and materials science.
