The Cost Of Being A Trooper: Sometimes it can cost and cost big to be a Trooper. Take our Trooper Sean Carpenter. Those of you who are friends and follow this Page know of Seans legal travels, not yet finished. You will remember he was wrongfully criminally charged for on duty conduct and wrongfully convicted by a Delaware Municipal Court Jury. He was criminally represented in that case and was represented in the successful appeal that followed to an Ohio Court of Appeals and then on to the Supreme Court. In the meantime he was fired and was represented by the two lawyers here at OSTA, a senior investigator and a paralegal assistant. Following and Arbitration hearing and post hearing briefs he was restored to duty........What did it cost? Well, the criminal aspect of the case cost $45,000.00 which thanks to our collective bargaining agreement was covered by what amounts to insurance. The hundreds of hours expended by our own legal team to guaranty his return to service if costed out would have been an equal sum. He is now being sued wrongfully in civil court and once again requires continuing representation which thanks to his Union has been arranged. So, our Trooper has looked at expense of upwards of $100,000.00 just to defend his fully proper conduct while in uniform protecting Ohios traveling public. Could it happen to others? Well, it happened to Scott and he is the last person you would expect to have been put in this box.......Are Unions a necessary component of service in law enforcement? Ask Sean!
