The Cost of Being a Disciple “If you want to be my disciple, - TopicsExpress

The Cost of Being a Disciple “If you want to be my disciple, you must hate everyone else by comparison—your father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even your own life. Otherwise, you cannot be my disciple. And if you do not carry your own cross and follow me, you cannot be my disciple. So you cannot become my disciple without giving up everything you own. (Luke 14:26, 27, 33 NLT) In this passage Jesus speaks in rather harsh and difficult terms of the cost of being one of his disciples. Jesus must be the supreme love of our lives, more than any other love relationship and we must be willing to forsake everything and everyone else for the cause of being his disciple. Jesus clearly speaks of the wisdom of taking spiritual inventory and counting the cost. I need to discover if there is anything or anyone that I value or hold more dearly than my relationship with him. It is not Gods desire to deprive me of relationships or even wealth or prosperity, he just demands that his disciples love him more than anything or anyone else. Jesus, I love you but I want to love you more. I want you to be the supreme love of my life. Forgive me for allowing other things to to become more important to me than you. Deliver me from the many idols that are still vying for my affections and attentions. Set me free from me.
