The Country Liberals Government is working with communities to strengthen their society through education and improving job prospects after students complete school. Northern Territory and Australian governments have funded 11 to 13-year-old students at Timber Creek School – 280km west of Katherine – with $20,000 to build their own bed frames to improve living conditions at home. The portable frames will enhance the health of children by raising their mattresses from the floor, improving the quality of their sleep, and in turn, their ability to learn at school. Guided by the school’s principal and a civil engineer, children are designing and fabricating the frames and creating a mesh infill, developing skills in welding, grinding, pipe bending, designing and drafting. Minister for Education, Peter Chandler said as part of the manual arts program, Living & Learning, students are improving their literacy and numeracy skills, and have become acquainted with workplace health and safety protocols. “This program has brought many benefits to the school like increased attendance, engagement with family and community members and providing valuable life skills to students. “Nearly 20 frames have been completed, and another 30 frames may be manufactured by the end of the year. “Timber Creek School has 75 students, and programs like this help bring together the community as the benefits flow well beyond the classroom. “A student who has had a good night’s sleep is much more likely to engage at school, contribute to discussions and produce positive educational outcomes. “Students are also beautifying school grounds, and the two projects have visible results that give students a huge sense of achievement.”
