The Department of Land Use Services is recruiting for Land Use Technician Trainees who learn to process land use and construction permit applications, interpret and explain codes, ordinances and regulations to the public, and research data, as well as collect related fees. Incumbents work under close supervision while receiving training and acquiring the knowledge and abilities necessary for promotion to Land Use Technician. Current vacancies exist in the High Desert, Joshua Tree, and Mountain offices. However, the resulting list will be used to fill all vacancies as they occur throughout the County. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT 1) Applicants must successfully pass a background check prior to appointment. 2) Travel throughout the County may be required. Employees will be required to make provision for transportation. At the time of hire, a valid California driver license and proof of automobile liability insurance must be produced for the individual providing the transportation. 3) Land Use Technician Trainees are eligible for promotion to Land Use Technician upon meeting job requirements and receiving a satisfactory work progress report, and must qualify for promotion within 12 months or be terminated. 4) Some positions in this classification may be assigned to a schedule of less than full time (80 hours) per two-week pay period. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS EXPERIENCE (must meet one of the following Options): OPTION 1: One (1) year of experience working in a public agency environment with responsibility for processing permit applications for, or enforcing, code compliance related to land use, building, construction, fire, environmental, or other code regulations, which includes explaining related regulations and requirements to the public. OPTION 2: One (1) year of experience with a primary responsibility of working with parcel maps to conduct title/property searches, for the purpose of identifying specific properties, ownership or allowable uses. OPTION 3: Fifteen (15) semester (or 23 quarter) units of completed college coursework in urban development, building inspection technology, code enforcement, land surveying or a closely related field. A list of related coursework must be submitted with the application. SELECTION PROCESS The written test will be administered on July 28, 2014, and will consist of an evaluation of knowledge and skills on the following topics: Interpersonal Skills Basic Arithmetic Reviewing and Interpreting Information Approximately one week prior to the test date, eligible candidates will be notified of the test time and location.
