The Crab Shack on Tybee Island east of Savannah is where “the elite eat in their bare feet.” Indoor and outdoor seating, visiting cats wandering around, incredible low-country cooking, and NO FRIED FOODS available, is a mandatory stop on all of our trips to Savannah. The “Half and Half” meal will cost you $21.99, but it’s worth $22. 1/2 pound of crab legs, plus a 1/2 pound of boiled shrimp (and a piece of corn-on-the-cobb) will NOT leave you feeling stuffed, ‘cause NOTHING’S FRIED! Such a healthy way to live! LaQuinta Inns give you breakfast with your room rental, though it may only be a “continental” breakfast at some locations. You will AT LEAST get coffee, juice, a waffle, muffins, etc. to get your day started. There are two LaQuintas on Abercorn St. in Savannah, one closer to town with doors facing the parking lot, and one further away from town, across the highway from Hunter Army Airfield, with interior corridors. The latter is always our choice when saving money is a concern. Except when the big black helicopters are flying in and out of the base. They DO make a racquet in the middle of the night. River Street in Savannah, on the Savannah River, is a fascinating place to traverse whether it’s day, night, summer or winter. However, about a month after our last visit there, two couples and two children were brutally attacked by street thugs at night in front of the Visitors’ Center. According to the police reports that were not filed for several HOURS after the attack, it was a “gang related” attack. Bunk. The visitors were from out of state and in no way knew there attackers (maybe they meant the THUGS were gang members). Because of the LACK of police presence on River Street, day or night, we drove down the cobble-stoned street with the windows barely cracked, to get the “flavor” and the sounds of the street, but would not get out and walk. Not without our son, Trevor, and his sidearm. I don’t have a license to carry…, yet…, and until I do, I won’t walk that beloved street again except in the daylight, with lots of crowds of people. Yes, the panhandlers are worse then, but at least visible. Sorry, Savannahs Candy Kitchen and River Street Sweets and Kevin Barry’s, etc. I’ll come back at night when I feel safer!!
