The Creature Feature…. One with broken bones from a kick, frozen ears and frozen tail, an abscess on its face, clearly starving…and, uninvited, it takes a life or death chance by travelling through a pack of loose dogs to break into our home. This is Critter. The other…..well… Animal control called. Again. He had another puppy. This one was found in a very high traffic area, a gas station, trying to fill an empty, aching stomach by attempting to lick and chew used bubble gum off the cement so she could eat it. When I arrived at Animal Control and started opening the gate to the trap in which she was held, she quickly scampered to the back, out of my reach. Very scared and very untrusting. We will never know her history but, from the look in her eyes, she clearly did not know whether to expect me to strike her or stroke her. She froze up. The look of fear remained. On the trip home, I stroked her soft fur and slowly pulled cockle burrs, thistles, and spear grass from her coat. I gave her scratches and pets for forty miles. I spoke softly. The look of fear was soon replaced with contentment. And then curiosity. She stared into my face for a long while as I continued to talk softly and stroke her fur. Soon, she started giving me puppy “kisses.” Then, as she fully realized I was not going to hurt her, she started to play. She would grab my hair and try to grab my nose. All very gently. Like she did not want to chase away my tenderness. It may have been the first tenderness she has known. Looking into her eyes, watching as the fear slowly melted, is a feeling that will never get old. Or ordinary. That feeling of doing “good” will always cause a newness and a warmth deep in my heart. A child’s smile, random kindness, a beautiful sunrise, a puppy’s love, these “treasures” are a few of the things that will always touch me. They always make me see the day just a little bit brighter. Regardless of my previous mood, I am forced to smile and feel better about the world in general. In short, we have another new furiend. This is what we, our RezQ Dogs family accomplishes. “Where there is Great Love, there are Always Miracles.” Willa Cather In honor of the woman who first phrased these beautiful words, please welcome out newest furiend, Please welcome Willa (already being welcomed by our beautiful feline furiend rescue, Critter).
