The Criteria for Success (PART 1: KNOWLEDGE): In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful: By time, Verily man is in loss, Except those who believe and do righteous good deeds, and recommend one another to the truth, and recommend one another to patience. [Soorah al Asr] The 4 foundations are present in this Soorah, and they are: 1) KNOWLEDGE Knowledge; because for one to have belief, he must first have knowledge. As Imaam Bukhari rahimahullah mentioned, Knowledge precedes speech and action. So know that you cannot have eeman except by way of knowledge, and this knowledge is knowledge of Allaah, His Prophet and the Religion with its proofs. It is obligatory for the Muslim to learn this knowledge. The one who learns it is rewarded, and the one who abandons it is punished. This knowledge is to be understood in the way it is intended, for knowledge is to know something upon its reality, whilst ignorance is to know something with a corrupted understanding. As for knowledge of Allaah, the individual knows His Creator by way of that which He has created, and through His Revelation. If one ponders over the creation, he will conclude that Allaah, the Most High, is his Creator: Were they created by nothing, or were they themselves the creators? Or did they create the heavens and the earth? Nay, but they have no firm Belief. [Soorah at Tur, 35-36] And Allaah has brought you out from the wombs of your mothers while you know nothing. And He gave you hearing, sight, and hearts that you might give thanks (to Allaah). [Soorah an-Nahl, 78] And from among His Signs are the night and the day, and the sun and the moon. Prostrate not to the sun nor to the moon, but prostrate to Allaah Who created them, if you (really) worship Him. [Soorat Fussilat, 37] As for specific attributes of Allaah, these are defined and restricted to the Nusus (texts). As for knowledge of His Prophet (salallaahualayhi wa salam), he is the one who informed us about Allaah. He began his call with the call to the Oneness of Allaah. The Muslim must know about him, for how can one follow him if he does not know about him? He was a man of exquisite character, generosity and manners. He is an example to be taken for he was the best of mankind and this was shown in his dealings with his family, the poor, the people, etc. He received Revelation from the Angel Jibreel (alayhi salam), and he is a Messenger from amongst the Messengers. As for knowledge of the Religion, the Muslim must have knowledge of its rulings with their proofs. A reminder to myself, first and foremost.
