The Cuban Embarg was put into place in 1958 to motivate the Cuban leadership to bring about better days to its people opposed to serving its own wants and needs of its leaders. According to history President Kennedy on Feb. 3, 1962, established the embargo against Cuba to reduce the threat posed by its alignment with the communist powers. Now almost 60 years later, no change has been made in Cuba. By opening trade with Cuba we will not be benefiting its people. All of the money that we invest into Cuba will only be put into the pockets of its greedy dictators, the very same dictators that we have been working to suppress for sixty years and now you want to pay them? Ending this Embargo before Cuba returns the sovereignty of its people would compromise the integrity of the United States. The United States has attempted to soften its hold on the Embargo before and the Cuban government has responded time and time again with acts of aggression. In 1977 President Carter tried to normalize relations with Cuba by opening the US Interests Section in Havana in 1977. Fidel Castro then orchestrated the Mariel Boatlift, which sent 125,000 emigrants including criminals and mentally ill people to the United States. More recently, President Obama relaxed the US travel policy in 2009 to allow unlimited travel to Cuba to visit family members. That same year, the Cuban government arrested an American aid worker and sentenced him to 15 years in prison. According to the CubanEmbargo.org 90% of state-owned economy ensures that the Cuban government and military would reap the gains of open trade with the United States, not private citizens. Foreign companies operating in Cuba are required to hire workers through the state; wages are converted into local currency and devalued at a ratio of 24:1, so a $500 wage becomes a $21 paycheck. A Cuban worker was quoted as having said, In Cuba, its a great myth that we live off the state. In fact, its the state that lives off of us. We cannot blame ourselves for the state in which Cuba is in. Even those living in Cuba realize that it is in fact their own government repressing them. Furthermore, What does Cuba have to offer us? Cigars? Are cigars really worth allowing a dictatorship to manipulate its people? Especially one so close to our borders? I hope the congress gathered there today vote against lifting this embargo. We cannot give these dictatorships more power and more money until they have stopped the suppression of their own people.
