The Daily Observer - Gambia News Promoting young talents delight academy coach Africa » Gambia Thursday, September 26, 2013 The head coach of Nice Academy, Kebba Keita, has expressed delight at the opportunity accorded to young players in this year’s Brikama Youth and Sport Committee’s Nawettan competition. Several Nawettan centres in the past have been criticised for failing to give new talents opportunity to excel but Brikama has being an exception this season with several youngsters taking the competition by storm with solid performances, most of whom came through the ranks at the Nice Academy in Brikama. And speaking to the Daily Observer in an exclusive interview yesterday morning, Keita who goes by his sobriquet MP highlighted the importance of promoting young players, noting that by promoting them to senior tournaments, their potentials and capabilities will increase extensively. He also said that football in Brikama is developing with a high sense of improvement, while adding that this year’s Newattan is an embodiment of young talented players unlike previous seasons. “I must confess that coaches of the various Nawettan teams in Brikama have done a great job by coming up with such a superb initiative and I will love to register my profound gratitude towards that aspect. I believe this initiative will pave the way for more young players from Brikama and its surroundings in football and as well prepare them for other leagues in the near future,” he added. MP stressed that Brikama is well blessed with young talented players and by giving them the required encouragement and support; they will obviously overcome the challenges that lie ahead. He added that their roles as coaches should be to create a gateway for the players to showcase those skills and talents during the Nawettan. He added: “So as long as I am concerned, this year’s Newattan season in Brikama is the best because coaches are not looking into ages but who can do it, and this is why the tournament this year has become more competitive.” He further stated that the importance of promoting young players into the Nawettan cannot be overemphasised, noting that by virtue of their performance, they can be lucky to sign contracts with bigger teams within and outside the country, which he said will be a great plus to the country’s football development. “Brikama is well known for producing good footballers and I believe with this initiative, it will continue producing more players that The Gambia would need for future competitions,” he opined, noting that teams from other Nawettan zones should emulate Brikama, while urging them to make good use of the young players they have at their disposal.
