Students attending Col. Wright, St. Mary’s Academy, Chenowith Elementary, Dry Hollow, and Mosier Community schools were the first students screened with the newest leading edge technology. The SPOT vision anylyser takes a picture of the inside of the eye revealing near-sightedness (myopia), far-sightedness (hyperopia), unequal refractive power (anisometropia), blurred vision, eye structure problem (astigmatism), pupil size deviations (anisocoria), and eye misalignment (strabismus.) In just a few seconds, the SPOT vision screening provides a comprehensive, reliable analysis that enables informed decision making about the need for follow-up professional diagnosis. The digital device is designed to work as easily with toddlers as it is with all ages. This year, students ranging in ages 6 to 15 years old were also screened for stereophonic depth perception. Most individuals perceive the sensation of depth, distance or closeness of the objects around us. This process is called stereopsis or stereoscopic vision. Those that lack this ability can improve the condition by exercise and treatment. 3-D vision allows a person to distinguish between relative depth and size of objects. In conclusion, ninety-one students out of seven hundred and fifty two students were identified with a recommendation for additional vision diagnosis. Thirty-three students received a 3-D deficiency and also will be recommended for further evaluation. Schools will be in direct contact with parents to seek additional professional diagnosis. Financial assistance will be available for parents struggling financially to seek eye health care for their children. Parents are encouraged to contact any Lion’s member for more information or enter thedalleslions.org.
