The Damned – 3 Great 12”s Of Eloise This cover of Barry Ryan’s 1968 number 2 hit became The Damned’s biggest UK hit, reaching number 3 in 1986 and there are a couple of rather good 12” mixes of it in addition to the 5 minute single version. The 1st UK 12” features a rather excellent 9 and a half minute version. The label nor sleeve have any indication that an extended mix is present though as no duration or mix title is listed. When it was finally released on CD in 2009 on the remaster of “Anything” the track had obtained the “Extravagent Mix” name but I’ve no idea why as it was not listed that way on any release originally as far as I can tell. The 2nd UK 12” which was limited came in a white sleeve with just the catalogue number printed on the front included a different mix known as the “No Sleep Until Wednesday 6:50 Mix”. This mix is still only available on commercial and promotional versions of this 12”. For some reason it was overlooked when the “Anything” remaster was compiled. Strangely, on that release they did include an edited version of the 1st 12” Mix that originates from an early 90’ Damned compilation called “The MCA Singles A’s + B’s. I’m sure they just edited the mix so they could fit more on the disc so it’s a bit strange that they included it instead of the “Wednesday” mix. The US & Canadian “Eloise” 12”s didn’t use either of the original remixes, instead, the 5:10 7” mix is present which is quite nice as it means you can get all 3 great version on this format. The 2 rather good b-sides “Beat Girl” and “Temptation” are included on all worldwide pressings of the 12”.
