The Davenport Theatre , Buxton Road Stockport Opened on 17 June 1937 and designed by Charles Hartley, the Davenport was a dual purpose cinema and live theatre and had a seating capacity of 1,750 Inside the auditorium there was a Compton Organ that rose on a platform at the side of the stage .. The Davenport Cinema was used as a location for the 1979 John Schlesinger film “Yanks” with a scene showing its Compton Organ being played It was owned and managed by Mrs Esther Harriet Burns who in 1964, at age 89, sold the Davenport to Tatton Cinemas who continued to run it with a mix of film and stage use.Mrs Burns contined to have an interest in the cinema until she died aged 99 years old. Davenport Cinema was closed in March 1997 and sold to Stockport Grammar School. It was demolished in August 1997 to provide the school with a car park
