The Dawn Wall live feed (climbing/video/dawn-wall-live-stream-the-final-four-pitches/), which began yesterday and continues this morning, on the final four pitches of the route, is the most bizarre and yet bizarrely compelling thing Ive ever watched in climbing. It reveals what we all know—that climbing is basically boring to watch—but I cant take my eyes off it. It is distinctly weird, with cameramen suddenly appearing next to the leader, as if a news crew were standing on the moon next to an astronaut. And it will likely raise more questions than it answers for viewers—like, how did that 20-foot quickdraw get there? Why is that one guy going backwards? Yet its fascinating and moving to watch these guys do their thing in real time, on such amazing terrain, in such detail, from half a mile away.
