The Day is Coming I will count Egypt and Babylon among those who know me - also Philistia and Tyre, and even distant Ethiopia. They have all become citizens of Jerusalem! Psalm 87:4 Psalm 87 begins with praise for Jerusalem (Zion) as Gods holy mountain - the city that God loves. Then in verse 4 the Lord speaks: I will count Egypt and Babylon among those who know me – also Philistia and Tyre, and even distant Ethiopia. They have all become citizens of Jerusalem. This is not merely a list of Gentile nations but also a sample of nations that have a long history as Israels enemies. We might expect that the psalmist would celebrate their ultimate defeat. One would not expect them to be counted among those who know God. We turn an enemy into no longer being an enemy when we make them a friend. Psalm 87 anticipates the work of God in Jesus - who offers salvation to all peoples and breaks down the walls of division between Jews and Gentiles. Psalm 87 finds its fulfillment in the vision of the heavenly Jerusalem in Revelation 21 where the nations will walk in Jerusalems light, and the kings of the world will enter the city in all their glory. Its gates will never be closed at the end of day because there is no night there. And all the nations will bring their glory and honor into the city. The world we live in today is not this world with all the hostility and hatred between peoples. Never in the history of America have we become a more heathen nation based on hating those who live by a moral code. Our country has become a land where there are too many self centered, selfish people who get offended way too easily My heart aches for my country and for the nations of the world and for the city of Jerusalem. I yearn for the day when Gods justice and peace will prevail on earth - when God will be known by all and all will live as citizens of God’s Kingdom. Until that day Psalm 87 fills us with a longing as it stirs up within us confident hope for the day will come when every knee will bow in heaven and on earth and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. Let us pray: Lord so move in the hearts of Your people and put a fire within them that will blaze a light across this nation that will bring revival and healing to our land. Lord You have graciously allowed me an avenue to reach the world with Your Word. Give me wisdom and gracious words that will speak to hungry hearts desperate for Your Truth. And in that Truth Lord make us free again to serve You in Jesus - the Way - the Truth - the Life - the One who loves us so. Amen.
