The Day of Atonement this year is October 4th. It is the “Most Holy Day” of in the feast seasons. It is a special time set apart by God for us to observe “as an ordinance forever…” The LORD said to Moses, “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘These are my appointed festivals, the appointed festivals of the LORD, which you are to proclaim as sacred assemblies.” -Leviticus 23 At Gods throne both Judgment and Mercy is cast. Atonement invokes the mercies of God over your life. You want the mercies of God over your life! When you accept the ultimate sacrifice of Christ, you accept the perfect sacrifice, the perfect Atonement. But accepting the sacrifice of Christ is a lifestyle of remembering the statutes of the Lord. James said “Faith without works is dead” and “show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.” Jesus said He came “not to abolish the Law and the Prophets, but to fulfill them.” Even though we have a more perfect and complete sacrifice in Christ through a one time act of Atonement, it is still a time that God desires recognition. If anything, new covenant believers should be MORE conscious of the Day of Atonement that the believers of old. For we have a more perfect sacrifice that took away our sins, not just covered them. We must honor God with what He has done for us. He has freed us from the accusations of Satan. He has liberated us from the chains of death, hell and the grave. He has trampled sickness, poverty and destruction. Now we must appropriate that Blood covenant established according to Hebrews 9:26 “But He has appeared once and for all at the culmination of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself.” We should be excited to recognize and celebrate God. And in doing so, He will honor His covenant with us. Prophetically, this year is an interesting one because there are 117 days between the Day of Pentecost and the Day of Atonement. We know that Atonement invokes the mercies of God. Psalms 117 is the middle passage of scripture and says- “Praise the Lord, all nations! Extol him, all peoples! For great is his steadfast love toward us, and the faithfulness of the Lord endures forever. Praise the Lord!” How wonderful our God is. The requirements of Atonement has always been fasting and giving. “They shall not appear before the Lord empty-handed. Every man shall give as they are able, according to the blessing of the Lord your God that He has given you.” -Deuteronomy16:16-17 The blessings of obedience have always been laid out, especially in the book of Joel: 1. Divine Increase 2. Revelation 3. Fresh Anointing 4. Supernatural Power/Miracles 5. Restoration 6. Abundance 7. Deliverance in the place of shame 8. Gods presence These are the promises we receive in Christ when we follow Him in faith and obedience.
