The Declaration of Independence................ The original Ten-Point Program of the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense” was a set of guidelines to the Black Panther Partys ideals and ways of operation: a ten point program of “What We Want” and “What We Believe” culminating with the opening paragraphs of the U.S. Declaration of Independence. This Ten-Point Program is the founding documentation and was the beginning basis of my political party: It functioned as a relevant document that reflected the goal objectives of the Party. In October, 1966, Huey and I drafted the first version of this Ten-Point Program, which established the primary goals of our political party. Finalizes at the War on Poverty office where I was employed by the city government, Department of Human Resources, city of Oakland, California We had nearly completed the Ten-Point Program, but had not come up with a way appropriately ending that would best summarized the party’s objectives. Huey had gone upstairs to the Law Library that was located above the War on Poverty office to research the laws pertaining to observing a policeman in the line of duty. He had discovered the California Supreme Court ruling that establish how we can to observe the police if we remain a reasonable distance from the them (defined by the ruling as 20 feet.) He came bound down the stairs from the Law Library to show me what he had found. ”Huey, I have statement that will summarize our Ten Point Program. And I began to recite it to him: ”When in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume, among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the laws of nature and nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation. We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. That, to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed; that, whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, and to institute a new government, laying its foundation on such principles, and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to affect their safety and happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly, all experience hath shown, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But, when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariable the same object, evinces a design to reduce them under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government, and to provide new guards for their future security.” “Huey that is what we are about, we have suffer for generations a “long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariable the same object, evinces a design to reduce them under absolute despotism”.
