The Denali Gravel Grinder was held on May 24, 2014. The race started at mile 31 of the Denali Highway which has a road surface that composed of course gravel and silt. Racers had the option to choose from 3 distances; 50 miles, 75 miles and the daunting 135 miler. The options were all out and back. The race started with a partly cloudy sky with slight tail wind. The cycle cross or mountain bikes along with 2 snow bikes competed in this event as well. Carey Grumelot pedaled carbon fiber snow bike with a very large tire to second place with a time of 11 hours and 18 minutes. The other carbon snow bike was shod with a 29 inch wheel with a smaller tire and completed the 75 mile option. The two 50 mile racers were the first to arrive at the finish reported that the winds were relentless and the return to the finish grueling at best. The 50 mile field had 2 riders while the 9 riders and the 135 miler had 15 starters and 14 finishers. The wining 75 miler reported that the wind was strong enough that he had to resort to his inner chain ring to pedal downhill!
