The Denver Foundation is happy that the Denver Post addressed the issues and challenges that foster care students face with regard to obtaining an elementary and secondary education in this article, written by Eric Gorski, and appearing on 9/14. A high school diploma is where the road ends in terms of formal education for over 90% of these students, because once they emancipate out of the foster care system at the age of 18, their support system dwindles even more. Emily Stanley, Senior Scholarship Officer for The Denver Foundation, wrote a letter to the editor at the Post behind Mr. Gorski’s article and offered some suggested resources such as the Helen M. McLoraine Scholarship for Emancipated Foster Care Students (of which Letisha Alvarado Barrington is a recipient), Mile High United Way, CASA, Guardian Scholars, Forward Steps, and Chafee. The list of resources was cut due to space issues, but if you would like more information, please contact The Denver Foundation at 303-300-1790. dpo.st/1mitS98
