The Department of Natural Resources has released their 2015 Forecast for the Republican River Basin. Similar to 2014, 2015 is forecast to be another Compact Call Year. Based on Compact Accounting Methods DNR is forecasting the basin to have an 18,800 acre feet shortfall, meaning plans must be developed to curtail the shortfall, otherwise up to 300,000 irrigated acres in the basin could be shut down. Fortunately NRDs, Irrigators and Producers in the basin have had the foresight and ingenuity to develop projects, such as NCORPE, which will allow the Districts to augment streamflow, ensuring the state of Nebraska achieves compact compliance, while subsequently avoiding the economically crippling shutdown of irrigated acres!
