The Depths - Canyon to Cosmos Sometimes it’s the story behind the photo rather than the image itself that makes a great memory. Trish and I were staying in one of the rustic cabins at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon in August last year. I had it in mind to get a Milky Way/Grand Canyon photo from the rim. Walking out the Bright Angel Point trail, I scouted nearby viewpoints in daylight and I made this image the first night I went out, with the certain knowledge this was a trial run and the following night would be the real thing. Memories include a chorus of crickets like nothing I’ve ever heard. And BATS, there were so many bats streaking by, only inches away. The following day we met a couple on the Kaibab trail. Ron and Sarah were walking from the South Rim to the North! Really amazing . And coincidentally, these new friends had dinner at the same time as us, the same place, and adjacent tables. So we heard great hiking stories, found new friends, and had a glass or two of wine. Well, the wine was the undoing. When we returned to the cabin, I loaded up my backpack, camera, and tripod and realized I had too much to drink. Shooting on the edge of the canyon was out of the question, but I had two more days! But those evenings were cloudy with distant thunder storms, so I never was able to get in day 2.
