The Detroit sports fan will root for the plugger, for the untalented, for the good guy, if he gives you all hes got. Detroit is a blue collar, lunch bucket, shot and beer sports town. Theyve cheered the odd, the drunk, the drugged up. A guy like Dustin Pedroia would own this town. But as soon as the Detroit sports fan discovers that you are a fraud---that you dont seem to care, that you are cheating them with your lack of effort, they dont want anything to do with you. I believe that Prince Fielder is becoming, slowly but surely, one of the most reviled athletes in Detroit sports history. And its only going to get worse. His contract renders him virtually untradable, unless the Tigers eat a lot of it. Were stuck with him. And that cant make the fans in this town warm and fuzzy.
