The Dickson County school system has begun advertising for bids for the safety and security improvements included in the first phase of its facilities improvement plan. The board of education advertisement appeared last week with bids to be opened Jan. 20, two days before the boards next regular meeting. The board is seeking bids for work related to access controls, security cameras and digital video recorders at various schools as well as installation of cross corridor doors at the building front entrances to direct visitors to the office reception areas. C&I Design has estimated the first phase will cost approximately $750,000 and is part of a $6 million, two-phase facilities plan being implemented by the school board. The safety upgrades were recommended by a special committee that reviewed security at all Dickson County schools following the 2012 shootings at Newtown, Conn. The upgrades will include the installation of security camera systems and construction to limit access to school buildings. In schools that do not have secure entrances, new locked entryways will be built that require visitors to be buzzed in and have access only to the office area. A pre-bid conference for the project will be at 10 am Thursday, Jan. 8, at the Board of Education central office. Bids will be opened at 2 pm Tuesday, Jan. 20. Bids could be presented to the school board to select a contractor at its Jan. 22 regular meeting. At its meeting earlier this month, the board voted to begin holding monthly work sessions in January, specifically to “stay on top of issues” regarding the facilities program. The first work session is set for 7 pm Thursday, Jan. 15, prior to the opening of bids for the first phase. Anyone interested in bidding on the project can obtain bid documents from C&I Design in Franklin or call 615-599-2525.
