The Dig to Save Clam Pass: Day 98 - Bonus Video! 8/21/2014 I got chased off the beach again today by a storm, only this time I got caught right out in it out in the open. First there was a powerful gust of cold wind that caused a sandstorm -- the white sand blew horizontally across the beach with such force that I had to duck down into my canal for shelter and hide behind the sand piles for three or four minutes. Then there was a short period of calm and suddenly Whammo! The rain and lightning started up all at once and I ran as fast as I could back to the shelter of the beach facilities (about a quarter mile away). I was drenched by the time I arrived, of course. Heres a video I took of the rain as I tried to dry out under an overhanging roof. Too bad I didnt capture any of the lightning shots on video -- it was quite a show! And speaking of crazy weather, dont look now, but theres another hurricane brewing down in the Caribbean (currently designated Invest 96-L), and once again, its headed straight for Florida. Even if it turns north like Bertha did, I know for certain that I will have to defend the dam against storm waves. Im trying to prepare early (the storm is still a couple of days away) by throwing as much sand up onto the top of the dam as possible, but I know its going to be a battle regardless, and Im envisioning another rain-soaked night spent waist deep in crashing waves desperately trying to patch holes in a crumbling dam. I had better eat my Wheaties.
