The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) wing, Vellore unit on Thursday has nabbed a 54-year-old commercial tax officer for demanding a bribe of Rs. 2,000 from a youth, who wanted to start his own enterprise. Officials said Sathish, a resident of Veppur, had completed M.Sc in IT and MBA and wanted to start a moulding unit for caps of water cans. The Department of Industry and Commerce was providing loans with subsidy for starting enterprises. For this, he had submitted an application for obtaining Taxpayers Identification Number. In his complaint, Sathish stated that he had approached Usharani, Commercial Tax Officer, Arcot, with the application seeking TIN. The official had to conduct a spot inspection of the unit too. However, she had initially demanded Rs. 3,000 to issue TIN and conduct the spot inspection. After he requested her to reduce the amount, Usharani settled for a bribe of Rs. 2,000. Sathish lodged a complaint with DVAC, Vellore. Following this, a team of DVAC personnel laid a trap for the official and caught her red-handed when she received the chemical coated currency from Sathish.
