The Donbas self-defense forces claim that Ukrainian troops keep - TopicsExpress

The Donbas self-defense forces claim that Ukrainian troops keep firing Tochka-U ballistic missiles at an empty field not far from the village of Pisky in Donbas, despite having a limited number of those missiles Massing rocket fire at an empty field might look downright absurd unless you know that there is a radioactive waste storage site beneath it, on the edge of a test ground belonging to a local chemical plant. In the Soviet era, rectangular hermetically sealed containers, spent nuclear fuel rods and the remnants of the graphite coating of reactors, with a high level of radioactive isotopes, were brought here for storage. The site holds at least 400 cubic meters of nuclear waste. Some 30 years ago, a commission inspected the shelter and spotted cracks in the sarcophagus. One Tochka-U missile exploded almost 800 m from the site, another one missed it by around 3 km. Experts claim that destroying the sarcophagus is next to impossible, even if a Tochka-U scores a direct hit. But rocket blasts may cause a shift in the soil and then subsoil and rain waters might infiltrate the cracks and come in contact with radioactive isotopes. Polluted water might then penetrate the Karlivske water reservoir that supplies Donetsk with drinking water. If only the trick works… photo © РИА Новости. Иван Руднев Kiev seemingly remains hopeful to even the playing field in Donbas and in terms of what is now happening in central Ukraine. A few months ago, a scandal broke out around a nuclear waste storage shelter that is currently being built near the Chornobyl nuclear plant. We need this shelter to store spent nuclear fuel from Ukrainian nuclear plants. At present, we send spent fuel to Russia for temporary storage but under bilateral agreements it will later come back. So, we risk facing an ecological disaster unless we build this shelter. Its construction complies with the earlier adopted law. We need this shelter in order to operate our nuclear power plants safely, a Ukrainian Energy Ministry representative said in the Verkhovna Rada. Katerina Vashchuk of the Sovereign European Ukraine deputy group called the decision a provocation. Gordonua quoted her as saying that the shelter was designed to store nuclear from other countries, and not Ukraine alone. photo © РИА Новости. Александр Кондратюк The current de-facto government has concealed from the people of Ukraine its intention to build a nuclear waste burial site in the Chornobyl exclusion zone, People’s Deputy Hanna Herman of the Party of Regions parliamentary faction said. Knowing the morals of the Ukrainian elite, anyone who will wish to store unlimited amounts of nuclear waste in Ukraine will be immediately granted permission. The any caprice if you pay for it principle remains sacred and unshakeable. As for storage safety requirements, it’s frightening even to think of how they are going to be met. This will be the “safest” shelter indeed! What else is there left for Kiev to do in this situation if not pound rockets on the nuclear storage site near Pisky? First, this perfectly fits the if you can’t swallow, at least take a bite principle. Although, hopes for a military victory and regaining control over Donbas have been lost completely, Kiev is determined to play all sorts of mean tricks on Novorossiya. Second, those who have full information about the waste shelter at Chornobyl zone will sleep better, if a radioactive pollution trick in Donbas succeeds.
